A number of Chief owners are proponents of replacing the factory belt final drive with a traditional chain. The benefits include:
  • no belt squeal
  • ability to run a wider (180) rear tire
  • easy to repair a broken chain on the road
  • lower cost to replace a chain than a belt

The process for converting the chain is straightforward, here are the parts you need. I have included duplicate part numbers where I could get them, for example you don't need to buy two separate rear sprockets...

  • Chrome Chain - EK Quadra-X Ring 530 ZVX2 - 110/C
  • Drag Specialties chain (112 links) p/n 192414
  • 46T Chrome Rear Sprocket - J&P 6000425
  • 49T rear drive sprocket, Drag Specialties # DS-325131
  • Transmission Sprocket - 24T, .810 offset - Drag Specialties PBI-288-24
  • O-Ring for Primary Case
  • Inner Primary Bearing - Fafnir 205PP
  • Inner Primary Seal
  • Primary Cover Gasket
  • Inspection Cover Gasket
  • 7 Inner Primary Lock Tabs
  • Jack Shaft Lock Plate
